“Ak’Shun James Jackson! What’s up my brother?”

“Same schit, different day Milt. To what do I owe this pleasure?”

“I’m just calling to check up on you man. That’s all.”

“Well you know how it goes, but I’ll be alright.”

“Is everything okay with Jamie and the girls?”

“Milton, I don’t even know where to begin. I mean everything seems to have happen so fast, you know. The girls are all good. They’re doing their thing and living life. It’s Jamie that’s got me twisted.”

“Ahh y’all at it again?” Milton chuckled. “Man you know how you love birds are. Y’all been going through this same schit every couple of years for what, twenty years now?”

“Twenty-three.”

“Huh?”

“Twenty-three years. We’ve been married for twenty-three years.”

“See, that’s my point. This too shall pass, so don’t sweat it.”

“Nah, this is different Milton. Today she basically told me that she wants a divorce.”

“What!!! Tell me that you’re pulling my leg man.”

“I wish I could say that Milt. And the ugly thing is, she waited to tell me on our twenty- third anniversary.” Milton got very quiet for a few seconds. “Hello.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m here. So she actually said it, or was it just some ole emotional hormonal female stuff she’s going through? You know how women can be.”

“Dude, she made it perfectly clear what she wanted.”

“So, what did she say?” Milton asked again.

“She said that she is ready to do her own thing, and whatever it is, does not include me.”

“She said that?”

“Sure did.” He answered in a somber tone.

“Damn, that was cold.”

“I couldn’t believe my ears Milton.” Milton said nothing as the phone went silent again for about three seconds. “It still doesn’t seem like it’s really happening. It’s like I’m in a dream, and any minute now, she will be waking me up to come eat breakfast.  We’ve been together for twenty-six years if you count the time we dated”

“But I thought that everything was kool with yall?”

“Nah, it hasn’t been too good over the past few months since her grandmother passed. Then Racheal moved out last year on top of that.” A.J took a deep breath. “I just thought it was empty nest syndrome, or something like that but it’s bigger than that.”

After a long silent pause, Milton spoke in a very serious tone. “Listen Ak’Shun. We’ve been boys since the second grade, and we know each other like the back of our hands, right?”

“Okay, so what’s your point?” A.J asked Milton in a suspicious tone.

“What I’m getting at is that you need to be honest and keep it real with me man.”

“What do you mean, I need to keep it real?”

“Have you been acting right?

“Milt, I haven’t really been gambling or even drinking for all that matters. All I’ve been trying to do is put together that strip mall deal that I told you about last time I was there.”

“Yeah, I remember that.” Milton replied. “How is that coming along, by the way?”

“Slow. It’s coming along real slow and its beginning to look like it’s going to fall through.”

“I’m really sorry to hear that man. When it rains, it pours huh?”

“You can say that again. Then they finally released the inheritance money from her grandmother, and I thought it was the answers to our prayers. You’d think things would have gotten better, but it started going downhill from there.”

“Dayum man. I really hate to hear you hurting like this.”

“Thanks Milton.” A.J chuckled. “I guess it’s just like Biggie and Puff Daddy said. ‘More money, more problems’.”

“Umm” Milton grunted. “Yeah, that’s what they said alright. Now Ak’Shun, take what I say with a grain of salt, but do you think it could be another man in the picture?”

“What!!!!!”

“Come on Ak’Shun. You think you would be the first man to have his wife cheat on him? Then considering some of the foul stuff you put her through back in the day.” Milton paused for a moment. “Look, I’m not trying to be negative, but when a woman says some ole slick schit like that to her man, she is either crying out for help before it’s too late, or lashing out because it’s already too late. Most of the time she probably already has some other dude whispering in her ear either way.”

“Nah, hell nah! Not my Jamie. She’s not like that.”

“Hum. Are you sure about that?”

“Am I sure? What kind-a question is that? Hell yes, I’m sure!!” A.J angrily replied.

“Alright. If you say so.”

“Look Milton if you have something to tell me, you need say it because you’re beginning to piss me off.”

“Listen, Ak’Shun.” Milton sat silent for a second before continuing. “Nah, never mind. I should be encouraging you to stick it out and make it work. You and Jamie have been together way too long.”

“Naw, man You need to just tell me what it is that you think you know.”

“Now I know that you know something because you’re stuttering.”

Milton laughed. “Look Ak’Shun. You my man and all, but I told you back then that you shouldn’t marry her.”

“Milton, you didn’t think I should marry anybody.”

“You damn skippy! You go giving your heart to these broads and they will break it or your bank account every time. I just think it’s best to keep ‘em at bay. You can have one main squeeze and even have a couple little rug rats with her, but to get all legally invested in them…” he paused. “I just don’t know anyone that did that schit  and made it work.”

“What about your parents?”

“That’s different. They’re old school. Besides, they’re from the south. “

“Whatever man. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Well on second thought, I’ve heard you say a lot dumber things than that.”

“Ha ha. Very funny.”

“So stop stalling and tell me what you’re trying so hard not to tell me?”

“How do I know anything about your wife and I’m living way down here in Atlanta? Y’a, y’all live in Cincinnati.”

“Really Milt. Really! You gonna really try to B.S me like that? We’re better than that.”

“We are man, and you know I got your back. I just don’t want to be in the middle of a bunch of BS. Especially between a husband and his wife.”

“If you are any kind of friend; that’s exactly what you will do.”

“Damn, Ak’Shun man.” He paused and took a deep breath. “Okay, you remember my neighbor Dex?”

“Dex?”

“Dexter, man.” Milton answered in a tone that suggests A.J. should definitely know who he’s talking about. “Dexter. What did you call him? What did you call him?” Milton struggled to remember. “Yeah that’s it. You called him God’s Gift.”

A.J. laughed. “Oh yeah. I remember that fool. Your neighbor with the green eyes that said he slept with over eight hundred women before he was thirty years old.”

“Yeah, that fool.”

“But what’s he got to do with anything?”

“Man he saw…” Milton paused. “Man, you know how he is. He’s always got a story to tell and we both know how he likes to lie on his dick.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. And?” A.J. grew frustrated, waiting for Milton to spit it out.

“He saw a picture of you and Jamie on my mantle and said that he was ninety-nine percent sure that he knew her.”

“He knew who; my Jamie?”

“Yeah, your Jamie.”

“How does he claim to know her and we live in Cincy?”

“He said it was about twenty years ago. She was in town visiting a sorority sister when he met her. I knew he was lying as soon as he started talking though.”

“And, how is that?”

“Because, he called her Summer.”

“He called her Summer?”

“Yeah Summer. He said that he hit it and been looking for her ever since.”

“He hit it? Nah. Nah. This can’t be.”

“Well Ak’Shun, I would typically just brush it off because I know how he is, but…”

“But what?”

“Man, I never told you this before but around that same time, I saw Jamie down here. You said she was visiting with her girl. I ain’t pay it too much attention because I saw her with so many other people.”

“And?!! What did you see?”

“I saw her with another man and they looked a little too comfortable and friendly with each other to me.”

“What?!! You saw my wife with a fool and didn’t tell me?”

“I’m p, p, pretty sure that I called and told you that same night. That’s when you told me she was here.”

“So was the dude you saw her with, Dexter?”

“I don’t remember what he looked like and I didn’t know Dexter back then.”

“So why you stuttering if you’re sure you’re so sure that told me?

“Look Ak’Shun, the last thing that I wanted to do was cause problems in your marriage, on some ole he says, she says schit. You said that y’all were doing good, so I left it at that. It could have been a family member that she was with. Besides, the girl Dexter claimed to have smashed name was Summer anyway.” A.J got completely silent, and Milton could tell by the heavy breathing that A.J was about to explode.

“Ak-Shun, you alright man?”

“Hell no I’m not alright man. Summer is what her family calls her.”
